Math & Science

Math updates: 

On Friday we wrapped up Chapter 2 in Math. This chapter's learning goal was to be able to compare numbers, know number names, and count to tell "how many"... WOW! I was one happy teacher when I  graded those tests. Our class made some awesome learning gains in comparison to the pre-test. I am so proud of everyone!

This week we are starting Chapter 3. This chapter's learning goal is to "represent, count, and read numbers six to nine."

Science updates:

This week we have been learning about our sense of smell. Today I brought in 5 containers, each storing a mysterious scent inside. Before I revealed the secret scents, I gave the students an opportunity to figure them out on their own. 

It was very funny to see the children cringe and squirm at the scent of vinegar and coffee! Some of the children thought the vinegar was a mixture of eggs and orange juice. Oh, yuck! Those kiddos sure know how to make me laugh :)

The "mysterious" scents were:
Coffee
Basil
Vinegar
Marshmellow candle
Cinnamon

After the scent test we documented our favorite smell and our least favorite smell.




Our favorite scent was a tie between the marshmallow candle and cinnamon. I was personally rooting for basil... but that's just me! :)

For the remainder of the week we will learn about our sense of touch. We will close the week with a fun culminating activity involving popcorn. Yum!

Reading Strategies: Beanie Baby Style

Here are a few reading strategies inspired by the TY Beanie Babies. We use these strategies throughout our day when we get to a word we are unsure of. We begin by using our owl eyes to look at the picture for clues.




I would like to encourage you to use these strategies at home with your child. You can use these strategies while completing homework, reading a story, or even out and about when they see a word or sign they are not familiar with.

Welcome!

Welcome to Mrs. B's class website. I'm excited to share this with you and provide the latest and greatest information on what these burrowing owls have been up to.

This week we are focusing on the sight word "like", letter "Ss", and letter sound /s/.
Here is a fun video we've been singing along with:



We have also been exploring our 5 senses. We took a trip to our school's picnic area and used our eyes to see all of the neat things around us. The students used a pencil and paper to jot down 3 things they saw with their eyes. Here are a few things we observed:
  • beehive
  • butterfly
  • tree
  • mulch
  • lizard
  • grass
  • owl statue (I wish we saw a real one!)
  • fence
  • clouds 
Just a reminder : Every other Thursday we go to the library. This Thursday (10/11/12) we are scheduled to go to the library. Please make sure your child brings his/her books on this day. Your child will be able to return their books and check-out 2 more, which they can keep and enjoy at home until our next trip to the library on October 25th. Thanks!
